Interview with Twitch Streamer FemSteph

Our last interview was in 2018. Tell us what you’ve been up to?

Since our last interview, I’ve become a mom and now have two little ones running around! I absolutely adore my kids and the adventure of parenthood. Streaming has been such a huge part of my life for so long, but the unpredictability while raising a family is tough. So, as of March I joined an indie publisher as their Head of Streaming and Influencers and now enjoy the perks of having benefits again. You can still find me streaming some co-working streams on my channel and I do a weekly stream on my publisher’s channel to show off cool games in the indie space.

You’ve been a part of the streaming community since 2013. What’s it like to be a part of such a strong community for more than a decade and what’s the biggest change you’ve seen during this time?

I will be eternally grateful for the amazing community that I’ve built up over the years. I have some of the coolest and most loyal viewers, who have supported me through every chapter of my career. We’ve definitely grown up together, and I get a lot of, “I started watching you when I was 13 and now I’m 23!” which is a very surreal feeling. On the other hand, it can also be a bit bittersweet to see long time viewers cycle out of your community as they grow up and find new things to occupy their time. I’m so happy for them, but I also miss having them around and hanging out!

What’s your current favorite or go-to game?

There’s a new idle game called Rusty’s Retirement that I’ve really been digging. It sits on the bottom third of your screen and does its thing while you work or have something pulled up on another monitor. It’s a nice way to take a break or to come back to it after a while and see how much your little farm has grown. Definitely a cozy and cute game to chill with.

What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of your work?

The streamer space is constantly changing and evolving, and so it’s hard to feel like you’ve finally got a grasp on the space and then it suddenly changes. Even the way content creators monetize on the platforms has shifted a lot. But the most enriching part will always be the community you create and the people who keep sticking around.

Back in 2018, your gear included A-T’s ATH-M50x headphones. What does your current gear look like and how does it all fit together for your streams?

I’ve moved away from over-the-ear headsets and am currently rocking some IEMs. I picked up some low budget ones to see if I would like the way they feel, and honestly they’re tough to beat, so I’m looking to invest in a higher-end set! I also really like not having headset hair after a long day of work. My all-time favorite, tried and true XLR microphone that I’m still rocking is the Audio-Technica BP40 mic. It sounds so good with my voice and comes through so smoothly. The combo works great, and I love it.

What advice would you give to aspiring streamers?

I would say consistency is key and to be authentic so you can build a community of like-minded people! It’s hard to stand out with the sheer amount of streamers that occupy the space now, so make small goals and celebrate your milestones. You’ve got this!
